STANWAY
Relief Road
GKL Building & Civil Engineering were appointed as the Principal Contractor to deliver the new Western Relief Road at Stanway in Colchester. The bypass which was c.1.3km in length was implemented to reduce congestion by linking the A12 with Warren Lane via the Tollgate Retail Centre.
The project highlighted all of GKL’s core capabilities:
- 500,000m3 cut and fill earthworks operation to prepare the former quarry for the construction of the bypass and the wider mixed use development land
- Delivery of 1.3km of new highway infrastructure including s278 and s38 works, foul and stormwater drainage systems inclusive of new pumping stations, provision and co-ordination of new utilities along with road and footpath construction.
- Design and construction of a new 30m single span bridge for the realigned Church Lane.
Following the completion of the Western Relief Road, GKL were retained to deliver Phases 2 and 3 of the primary infrastructure for the new residential development to allow for the sale of fully serviced development plots to National Housebuilders.
